Wednesday November 6: SANTA CRUZ — Sometimes you are wonderful and sometimes you are lucky. And sometimes, if you can find that magical combination of both, you can win the chance to chase your life’s dream on someone else’s dime. Unsponsored Hawaiian surfer Torrey Meister hit that sweet spot Wed at Steamer Ln. when he won the Coldwater Classic Invitational and a one-year O’Neill sponsorship worth $50,000. The sponsorship will support Meister for a season of chasing a spot on the Association of Surfing Professionals’ World Championship Tour and will include a full-time videographer to document the voyage.

“I don’t know if you can call surfing for a living rough. I wasn’t really stressed, but my wallet was being stressed,” said Meister, 25, who hasn’t held a full-time sponsor in three years and isn’t ranked among the ASP’s top 700 surfers.
