SANTA CRUZ — Firefighters on Wed contained a wildfire that burned about a half-acre of hillside above Harvey West Park.

Smoke from the blaze was visible in other parts of Santa Cruz, but no one was injured and no buildings were damaged, commented Santa Cruz Fire Battalion Chief Robert Young. Smoke initially was reported about 3:10 in the afternoon on the two hundred block of Sheldon Avenue. Firefighters found the fire on a deep wooded area where someone had been camping illegally, stated Young. They attacked the fire with water from Sheldon Avenue, then sent another crew below it to a trail near Evergreen Street in Harvey West Park.
