Spate of violence offsets New Year’s celebrations in handful of Bay Area cities

A mostly celebratory transition into 2015 in the Bay Area was offset in a handful of cities with a spate of violence marked by gunfire and civil unrest related to the ongoing nationwide demonstrations over strained police-community relations, authorities said.

That violence included 2 instances on the Peninsula where officers were fired upon. And the San Jose Police Department, citing nonspecific threats made against law enforcement, took the not precedented step of mandating two-person units for all patrol shifts for Whole new Year’s Eve as a hedge against potential ambush attacks.


…Santa Cruz drew police attention as about 20 people, dressed in all-black clothing akin to “Black Bloc” activists, marched to the county jail around midnight carrying banners promoting violence against and death to police officers.
