Shooting near city centre Santa Cruz leaves one man dead

The victim was found on the street next to a white Mercedes-Benz SUV, according to witnesses.

Santa Cruz >> A man was shot dead Fri night near middle of the city Santa Cruz, according to Santa Cruz police.

About 7:30 in the afternoon police arrived at River Street and North Pacific Avenue to find a man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, Lieutenant Bernie Escalante said.

The victim was found on the street next to a white Mercedes-Benz SUV, according to witnesses. The car> with the driver’s side door ajar, was parked in the middle of Pacific just past River Street. The car> blocked the entrance of a trailer park.

Early reports show the man was the victim of a drive-by shooting.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, Escalante said.

Escalante declined to identify the man pending notification of his family.

The death is the first homicide of 2015 in Santa Cruz County.

Police sent out a Nixle alert about 9:30 in the afternoon warning residents to avoid the area for 5 hrs. while officers investigated the homicide.
