Sam Chelanga wins Wharf to Wharf; Gotcher top American

CAPITOLA >> A delay in his naturalization paperwork kept Samuel Chelanga from contending for the title of Top American in Sunday’s 43rd annual Wharf to Wharf Race. The title of top overall racer will have to do.

The Kenyan-born Chelanga broke away from three-time champion Shadrack Kosgei shortly after the 5th mile of the six-mile race and dashed down the hill into Capitola to win in 27 mins. 28 seconds.

Kosgei and John Muritu Watiku, both also of Kenya, recorded identical times as Chelanga in finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively, in the sixteen000-person race. Nelson Oyugi placed 4th in 27:29. The top 4 won $4,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
