Santa Cruz teen saves woman from drowning at Davenport Landing

Published Mar 2

DAVENPORT >> Swift thinking by a 17-year-old girl from Jolly Valley saved the life of a woman who waded into the surf at Davenport Landing on Saturday.

Abbey Meck, a junior at San Lorenzo Valley High School, was sitting on the south end of the beach studying for her Saturday test with a friend about 1 in the afternoon Saturday. She noticed a woman at the ocean’s edge who was knocked down by a wave.

The woman laughed and stood back up, then she got knocked down again.

“She got sucked out really fast,” commented Meck.

“I didn’t want 2 people drowning,” she said.

A wave pushed the woman closer to shore. Meck waded deeper in the water.
