Published Tuesday July 5

SANTA CRUZ >> Entering into the 3rd year of the state’s effort to give local spending control decisions to its school districts, the Santa Cruz City Schools 2016-2017 budget calls for $73.3 mill. in projected spending.

Spending increases, about $3.4 mill. higher than the previous year, will result in continued drawing down of the dual school districts’ reserves by about $1.2 mill. leaving the budget with more than double the mandated three percent minimum funding safety net in the coming year.

“The funding that is lacking from the state is partially offset by our community,” City Schools Superintendent Kris Munro wrote in her budget message.
