Santa Cruz man delivers medical aid in Iraq

SANTA CRUZ >> Alekz Londos, a 35-year-old from Santa Cruz, marked the halfway point of a four-week humanitarian mission to Iraq this four weeks with a glance at a checklist of things he hoped to accomplish.

He wanted to deliver medical supplies and everyday items to refugees of the war against ISIS. Check. He wanted to volunteer in hospitals and volunteer in camps for refugees of the war in Syria. Check. He also wanted to document his trip and make contacts with military and aid organizations to find out what other supplies are needed. Check.

In the city of Erbil, about a 5 hour drive north of Baghdad, Londos found 110-degree heat and refugees of the nearby ISIS-held city of Mosul.
