Come race day, a race director can be called upon to perform several curious tasks. At the first Wharf to Wharf race in 1973, Ken Thomas found himself with a gun in his hand.

Thomas, the race director for the first 6 years of the Wharf to Wharf, hadn’t appointed anyone the official starter. So, he volunteered to do the job himself.
