Marin sets drug company fee for medication disposal program

Published Sunday July 24

Marin County moved a step closer to launching its drug takeback program by setting its fee for the pharmaceutical industry.

Under a county ordinance approved last year, drug companies selling to Marin residents have to develop a plan to collect and dispose of not wanted medications. The pharmaceutical companies will have to pay a fee, which the Board of Supervisors nailed down last week, so the county’s environmental health division can operate the program.

The cost recovery rate is set at $190 an hour, effective Jul 25. The program is expected to cost $50,000 annually.

None of the counties, furthermore has rolled out its program.
