New downtown Santa Cruz ranger patrol offers city workers more ‘interpretive’ role

SANTA CRUZ >> The casual polo shirts and maybe even khakis remain, but Santa Cruz’s newest city centre patrol mark a change in approach for the city’s peacekeeping efforts.

“It’s really different. I love it. I’m a social person,” stated Santa Cruz senior ranger Jeremy Mathews, striding briskly down Pacific Avenue in search of a man alleged to have stolen some hardboiled eggs. “I love talking and meeting people from other countries and giving them restaurant suggestions.”
