Editorial, July 28, 2016: Why fire season never seems to end

For the people who have lost properties and other house the Soberanes wildfire is a tragedy.

But to firefighters and state fire officials who are battling this blaze and another in Southern Cal. in harrowing conditions and impassable terrain, this is a giant front of danger that seems to be growing, even when there are no visible flames.

That’s because firefighters are putting their lives at risk to defend sometimes indefensible conditions, in areas where fire is an ever present danger. A bulldozer operator cutting fire lines has been killed in the Soberanes fire; a man who refused to be evacuated was found burned to death in the Los Angeles-area fire.
