Many well-known hospitals fail to score 5 stars in Medicare's new ratings

Published Wednesday July 27

The federal government released its first overall hospital quality rating on Wed slapping likely average or below-average scores on numerous of the nation’s best-known hospitals while awarding top scores to dozens of not heralded ones.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rated 3,617 hospitals on a one- to five-star scale, angering the hospital industry, which has been pressing the Obama administration and Congress to block the ratings.

In the Bay Area, only 2 hospitals garnered 5 stars: Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center of Santa Cruz.
