The completely new film “Surfer’s Blood,” by Santa Cruz-based photographer and filmmaker Patrick Trefz isn’t just another awe-inspiring joyride through large waves and epic wipeouts. Trefz is looking past the cheap thrills to present meaningful profiles of people who lived their lives surfing.

One of those people is Shawn “Barney” Barron, one of Santa Cruz’s legendary surfing figures who died at 44 in 2015. Barron was one of Trefz’s closest friends and a collaborator.

“He was always the nice of guy who was open to so several things,” remarked Trefz. “He was this creative mass that people were always drawn to. He had a accurate connection to the creative process.”
