Dan Haifley, Our Ocean Backyard: Contested port commission election is about ocean access

Published Sunday November 6

8 people are competing to win 3 seats in the Santa Cruz Port Commission election. It’s the most intense campaign I’ve ever seen, so I’d like to provide a little background, and context.

The Santa Cruz Harbor is our doorway to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and beyond. It opened in 1964, thanks to largely years of advocacy by fishermen who needed a sheltered port. Those who supported its creation — including Santa Cruz voters, the state of CA and the federal government — wanted it to be affordable, and accessible for all.

Daniel Haifley is executive director of O’Neill Sea Odyssey. He can be reached at dhaifley@oneillseaodyssey.org.
