Boardwalk displays vintage Santa

Published Sunday December 25

A similar Gale-built Santa, which has restored attire, is for sale at eBay…

SANTA CRUZ >> The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk already had Laughing Sal, a figure from San Francisco that is undergoing repairs, but it had no Santa Claus.

That changed in early Dec when Boardwalk Mechanical Manager Todd Manoff found a vintage, life-sized, mechanical Santa Claus on display at the Project Purr’s Rescued Treasures on Front Street in early December.

The display started a conversation and completely new life for the figure made in the 1950s by craftsman Harold Gale. A similar Gale-built Santa, which has restored attire, is for sale at eBay for $650.

As for how much Manoff paid, he stated “The price was right.”
