Chris Moran: Wharf master plan goes too far

Published Saturday February 11

Why is it a marvelous idea to erect 3 large buildings — one would be 45 ft. high — at the end of our wharf? I don’t think it is.

Consider this: a thirty percent increase in traffic on the wharf; an “events pavilion” obscuring views of the lighthouse and ocean; and sadly, the sea lion view-holes would be removed. People love looking at the seals at those holes.

Last week’s storms caused the closing of our wharf due to 25-foot-plus waves. Other wharves have met destructive forces.

• In 1983, an El Niño event washed away a 155-foot section of the Huntington Beach Pier.

• Also in 1983, 250 ft. of wharf and a restaurant washed away at San Clemente.

Article length: About 420 words.
