Gary Griggs, Our Ocean Backyard: Winter of 2017: How does it compare?

Published Sunday February 19

Santa Cruz can never be accused of being boring or predictable. We have gone from water rationing drought to damaging flooding in a few months time. Weather is difficult stuff and only fools and tourists try to predict it in advance.

This has not been a wonderful year for Hwy seventeen commuters, or for those people living in low-lying areas such as Felton Grove. We are somewhat above helpful average in our annual rainfall (by Feb. seventeen Santa Cruz had received nearly 38 inches), but the winter isn’t over yet.

As someone stated a week or so ago, whoever is doing the rain dance can stop now.

This year they have been deluged with seventy to 75 inches.
