Multiple factors trigger five traffic deaths on Highway 1 in 2017

Published Sunday March 12

SANTA CRUZ – It has been a deadly year along the ten miles of winding, coastal Hwy 1 north of Santa Cruz city limits.

5 people died in 2 not related head-on collisions along the stretch in February. In 2016, four people died, according to CA Hwy Patrol officer Trista Drake.

Although the two-lane highway has experienced serious traffic problems beyond city limits, no CHP officers are assigned to Hwy 1 north of Santa Cruz, Drake said. That’s because the agency is short-staffed while it awaits whole new cadets to bolster patrols. Additionally that was not the case in the past.

Epperson has noticed an uptick in motorists on the highway during weekends.
